Case 09 · Online fraud

Romance scam

Online relationships created to ask for money, gifts or loans.

What it is

Someone approaches you on social media or a dating app, builds a relationship of trust and affection and, over time, starts asking for money: an emergency, a trip, a fee to release a gift. These profiles usually use other people’s photos and well-rehearsed stories. Falling for this scam is not naivety. It is designed precisely to exploit real feelings.

How it works

  1. We listen to your story and analyze the conversations and the payments made.
  2. We check where the photos came from and cross-check the profiles, numbers and accounts used.
  3. We work to identify who is behind the profile and where the money went.
  4. We deliver an organized report for the boletim de ocorrência (police report) and legal action.

What we will need from you

  • The conversations, from the first to the last contact (if they were on WhatsApp, use the "Export chat" option; on other platforms, screenshots)
  • Links or @ of the profiles the person used
  • Photos they sent you (the files, if possible)
  • Receipts for Pix payments, transfers or deposits
  • Approximate dates and the total amount sent
  • Phone numbers and emails they used
  • Boletim de ocorrência (police report), if you have already filed one

We never ask for passwords, verification codes or access to your accounts.
