Case 13 · Online fraud

Boleto scam

Tampered or fake boletos (Brazilian payment slips) that divert your payment to another account.

What it is

The boleto (a Brazilian bank payment slip) looks legitimate, with the company’s brand and the right amount, but the barcode has been swapped and the money goes to someone else. It can arrive by email, WhatsApp, through a fake website or even through a virus that alters the boleto on your computer. You only find out when the real bill is still unpaid.

How it works

  1. We compare the boleto you paid with the real one.
  2. We identify the bank and the payee that actually received the money.
  3. We check how the fake boleto reached you.
  4. We organize the evidence for the bank, the creditor company and the police.

What we will need from you

  • The boleto you paid (PDF or photo)
  • The real boleto or the original bill, if you have it
  • Payment receipt
  • The email, message or website the boleto came from
  • Payment date
  • Boletim de ocorrência (police report), if you have already filed one

We never ask for passwords, verification codes or access to your accounts.
